True Blood - the HBO TV Series

Greetings from Seminyak, Bali.

Well another slightly cloudy day and the temperature is around 27 degrees with 87% humidity.

Our dollar is around 7,698 rupiah.

So I have just discovered True Blood - this truly awesome TV series is based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series (or also known as The Southern Vampire Mysteries) by Charlaine Harris.

Peter and I started watching Episode 1 last night and he got bored with it and went to bed but I ended up staying up until 6am - but only got to Episode 8!!! Still got four more episodes of the first season to go! Cannot wait.

Before I get into the show - you have to listen to the opening credits song - it is fantastic. It is sung by Jace Everett and called "Bad Things". Checkout his MySpace site and have a listen...let me know what you think - kind of reminds me of Chris Isaak a little - great song.

Okay so briefly it is a vampire story - of course you know I just LOVE anything to do with vampires! It is basically a love story between Sookie Stackhouse - who is a little different in that she can hear other people's thoughts - well she meets Bill Compton a local vampire - and well they fall in love! She cannot hear Bill's thoughts - so it gives her peace to be able to finally relax without having to hear what he is thinking. It has quite an involved storyline with a serial killer thrown in and various other subplots - well worth a look.

The first book was printed in 2001 - so it precedes Twilight by a number of years (Stephanie Meyer not having started to write it until mid 2003) - and there are some striking similarities - although Twilight is pitched at a much younger audience (although it still attracts oldies like me!).

Such as:
  • A young woman who is a little bit different and doesn't fit in.
  • Said young woman finds her soulmate in a vampire.
  • The mind reading - although in this series it is the woman who can read minds.
  • The mind reader cannot read the thoughts of the other - Edward and Isabella anyone?
  • The debunking of many vampire myths - the crosses, garlic, etc - although in this series vampires cannot come out into the daylight.
  • A love triangle between a human female, a vampire and a shapeshifter - sound familiar?
This is a much more adult themed series though - the TV show is quite raunchy - and it moves along so fast and really draws you in - cannot wait for Series 2.

Well I am off to wishlist the books online - there is 7 books in the series - so that should keep me busy for a while.

Sampai Nanti.
