Waroeng Asia Thai Food, Legian

Greetings from Seminyak, Bali.

Well another incredibly rainy and windy day today - so stayed indoors and not sure I can be bothered to go out to dinner and am desperately pleading with Peter to go out and find something truly exciting to bring back for dinner - but I really don' t think that will work - stay tuned!

Well we managed to go to Waroeng Asia Thai Food restaurant last night. It is at Jalan Arjuna/Double Six No 23 H, Legian Kuta.

It is a very small restaurant but looks very cosy at night.

I must admit the food was not as good as we remembered and it did not help that there was a table there with a screaming child - I know it cannot be helped but this child was not crying this child was screaming - not a very appealing dinner atmosphere. They were either the owners or friends of the owners as they were spread out at the biggest table and ventured in and out of the kitchen. Luckily they did not stay too long after we ordered so it got quieter and more pleasant.

It took quite a while for them to take our order and that is probably why we noticed the screaming child so much.

When asked for our order I ordered a Pineapple Juice (12,000 rupiah) and a glass of Hatten Rose - but they would not serve the Rose except by the bottle so had to get a glass of their Hatten White (not as nice but same price 22,500 rupiah) and Peter got his large Bintang (21,500 rupiah) and for dinner we got the Fried Spring Rolls - vegetarian for 14,000 rupiah.

Peter got the Red Vegetable Curry (22,000 rupiah) and I got the Pad Thai and asked for it vegetarian (27,000 rupiah).

The food looked good but must admit it lacked flavour - because I passed on the fish sauce for my Pad Thai it did not seem to have any other flavouring added at all - so was really rather bland. How difficult would it have been to whip up a simple sauce to go with the Pad Thai to give it some flavour? So I ended up stealing the sauce of Peter's curry to add flavour to my meal - worked out fine.

Peter's curry was nice too but lacked punch - so he ended up using most of the chilli mix on the table to give it some much needed spice.

But it was a pleasant evening nonetheless, we ended up having two drinks each - so it was a nice way to spend the evening and of course it is only a very short walk back to the apartment - so very handy.

But probably will not go again - there are so many other restaurants to try - there is really no need to go back to places where the food is not really really good.

Apart from food today I wanted to show a couple of piccies of the bangles/necklaces/earrings I bought on the beach a couple of weeks ago. We were on the beach having a few drinks at Sunset Stubby just past the Hard Rock Cafe near the Kuta markets.

Jenn and I were getting fake tattoos - don't ask me why.

So any time you are on the beach you will be bombarded with locals trying to sell you something - watches, sunglasses, bows and arrows??? - don't ask, and also jewellery and of course pearls. We were sitting there and a lady came up and sold Courtney some bangles for 60,000 rupiah. When I say some bangles I mean a whole bag full of them - totally excessive. So of course me being the perfect consumer I was targetted next - I ended up with a bag full of earrings, bangles and necklaces for 100,000 rupiah - I didn't want to be too cheap! So here are photos of the haul:

So in amongst this lot are a heap of bangles - even a few really nice wooden ones.

There are also a stack load of beaded necklaces - some with wooden pendants, some with shell, some with stone and some with resin - a couple of them are extremely nice and worth the entire price on their own!

There were also about 20 pairs of earrings included. Some shell, some stone some wooden - and once again a couple pairs are extremely nice.

More earrings.

Another look at them all - Jess and Amy - I hope you are looking because you are going to get them all on my return. Could make nice gifts for your friends.

So that is about it for today - we are just going off to Poco Loco down the street - it is our local Mexican restaurant - been there for decades - really good food and absolutely HUGE portions - so we have to remember to NOT order entrees!!!
